South Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe lived up to the expectations, it was beautiful in every way and lots of things to see and do. Here are my top recommendations for when you visit. Also, don’t be discouraged but there really is no easy way to get to Lake Tahoe from certain parts of the US. Coming from Iowa, it was a good portion of a day traveling via flight.
Food:
- Azul Latin Kitchen- Located in Heavenly Village it is a healthier take on Mexican and Central American food. The chef uses local and organic items whenever possible.
- Ten Crows BBQ- Get a chance to taste some of the best Tahoe has to offer. Indoor and Outdoor seating available and live music to set the mood.
- Riva Grill- A pier front restaurant popular for their great scenery as well as their “Wet Woody” rum cocktails. You cannot beat the view and all of the food we had was great as well.
- The Beach House- This outdoor restaurant has a casual atmosphere and allows you to talk right in off the beach. Pet friendly, swimming suits allowed, great drinks, and friendly atmosphere.
Visit:
- Emerald Bay- Crystal blue waters and some of the best hiking with a view. This is a must see and is 12 miles north of South Lake Tahoe.
- Heavenly Gondola & Mountain Resort- It doesn’t even matter what season you visit this is so great to get some of the best views of Tahoe. There is a stop at 9,123 feet and will give you a beautiful view of Lake Tahoe. From there you cans stop and have a drink at the observation deck, or continue up the mountain. This is also one of the largest ski resorts on the continents for you snow lovers.
- Kayak on the Lake- Clear bottom kayaks are available for rent so you can see the waters during your trip. Clearly Tahoe offers these for rent and will deliver to where you are staying. They offer guided tours along with daytime and sunset guided tours.
- Cascade Falls Trail- If you are in for some light hiking this one is for you. It is a 1.5 mile hike but does have rocky surfaces so be prepared with the right shoes. It also allows you to see the beautiful falls and then continue on further if you wish. There are panoramic views along the trails that make this shorter hike well worth it.
Lodging:
- The Coachman Hotel- Known as one of the best hotels in South Lake Tahoe. The hotel offers many amenities to use when you are not adventuring around Tahoe. The staff is extremely friendly and the hotel is dog friendly. There is also continental breakfast, an espresso bar, and social hour in the evenings. One of the 42 rustic stylish rooms have cozy beds and will keep you rested up.
- Basecamp Tahoe South- This is a one of a kind stay that is sure to keep you busy. This hotel is all outdoor themed and has rooms anywhere from standard rooms with comfy beds, to a camp ground theme with bunkbeds. There is something for everyone. Whether you are there with a small group or as a family. The staff also host communal dinners on certain nights and s’mores can be made around the campfire.
- Black Bear Lodge- This lodge was recently reimaged for adrenaline junkies and those travelers looking for a relaxing vacation. The rooms have comfy beds, wet bars, and if you chose hot tubs and private patios. The lodge is also close to many restaurants within walking distance.
- There are also many Airbnb options available. That is the route we chose last time and worked for the larger group we had. Be sure to do your research on the host before booking any stays.
